About the Author
Sheila K. Collins, PhD, has referred to herself as a “dancing social worker†for over 40 years. Bringing the perspective of a theater artist to her work as a social worker, professor, clinic director, keynote speaker, and organizational consultant, she writes, speaks, and advocates for the power of play, dance, and the expressive arts to help us make it through life’s toughest challenges. Stillpoint was written originally to help social work students with their self-care, and the revision as a response to the proliferation of caregiving responsibilities in women’s lives. Her award-winning book, Warrior Mother: Fierce Love, Unbearable Loss and the Rituals that Heal, tells of her journeys with two of her three adult children and her best friend through their life-threatening illnesses and deaths and of the rituals that helped her family to heal. Her engaging 2016 TEDx talk, “When Death Threatens,†demonstrates the challenge and the gifts of being a caregiver to a loved one dealing with a death-defying illness. Sheila holds an MSW from Wayne State University School of Social Work and a PhD from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She currently directs and performs with the Wing & A Prayer Pittsburgh Players and writes a weekly blog, Dancing with Everything, on her website, www.sheilakcollins.com. It is a gem not only for caregivers, but for all of us who desire to “find ease and time to breathe and reclaim joyâ€It is fascinating that a book titled STLLPOINT invites one to a dynamic, flowing, energized, wholistic life. Of course, once I opened to the PLAYBILL (Table of Contents) I immediately connected with the engaging truth of T.S. Elliot’s poem:“. . .At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,There would be no dance, and there is only the dance. . .â€As one engages this book Sheila and Christine invite us to embrace the Chinese proverb:I hear, and I forget,I see, and I remember,I do, and I understand.For me this becameI read, and I forgetI journal, and I rememberI do, and I understand.Being one who can become stuck in a life that is over informed and shaped by rational thought this book provides the opportunity for me to acknowledge and concretely encounter the reality that “Self-caring and self-healing require moving beyond our logical intellectual minds into the kinesthetic, feminine, and creative parts of ourselves.†(page xxvii) This book creatively and playful leads us to be attentive and to integrate these dimensions so we may be whole.One can fruitfully approach this book as a textbook and read it from cover to cover; it can potentially be used as textbook in classes focused on self-care /self-healing. I chose to engage it in a different manner.I embraced it as a “devotionalâ€. It rests on the right side of my desk; I pick it up and turn to a few pages and see what pops out today. That becomes a focus for my journaling which ends with asking the question of how I intend to implement this into my life today. One could do that in a more organized linear manner if you chose to read a small portion of the book day by day from beginning to end; or you could pick certain chapters that call for your attention.This approach has given me many AHA moments. For instance, when I read the questions inviting me to determine whether I needed to work on self-care (page 3) the third one awakened a deep truth in me: “Do you often find as you make and complete your ‘to do’ list that your needs are not even on the list?†OUCH! And another that was worthy of my journal time: “Are you a person who stays too long in a job or in a relationship out of a sense of loyalty, forgetting about the loyalty you owe to yourself?â€Many wonderful stories are told to illustrate the precepts. The flow of the stories seems to create a community as I would find myself nodding and saying, “Yeah right! I connect! I’ve been there.†Or find myself celebrating the courage of one who would take steps to let transformation happen. Even better one can use the book to build community with others by inviting them into conversations around the concepts such as the FIVE SKILLS Of SELF-CARE (first listed on page 12 and then expanded throughout the book) or discussing the 7 affirmations in the FRIENDS AND LOVERS: A HEALTHY PACT (page 95) that invites us to explore what a healthy pact among adults looks like.The possibilities seem endless. So, I repeat: I highly recommend this book for the way it weaves together insightful information, stories that create connection, and exercises engaging body, mind, and spirit that lead to transformation and health. I was one of the first readers of the original Stillpoint. At the time, I was impressed with the approach and how well written it was written. Flash forward to 2018. I am the primary caregiver of my 100 year old mother. Even though she is a sweetheart, who would have thought it would be this hard? Then comes the second edition. After reading it, I realized I wasn’t ready 26 years ago. Together Shelia and Christine have opened their hearts and shared their expertise and dance in a way that speaks directly to me and my needs now. I am grateful, and believe my fellow caregivers will love this book too.
The sage advice and experience conveyed through the pages of Stillpoint is so evident and needed right now. The term “Caregiver†has completely changed in my mind and I now realize that most of us are Caregivers of some kind, even if it learning Self-Care!
