I usually trust amazon reviews and was pretty disappointed with this book. I love a good mystery but this was like suspense here and there but no content ever came. Really predictable ending in some ways. I wish I would have skipped this one. Bummed.
I enjoyed this read. It was a pleasant diversion. I kept reading, because I figured out what was really going on about 1/3 of the way through the book, but thought "It can't be that obvious!" And kept reading in hopes of proving myself wrong. I am not a genius, so it must have been that obvious, because I read all the way to the end to discover that "I had that." And was sorta disappointed.
OK, middle-aged mentor abuses child prodigy for years and impregnates her at age 15. She waits too long to tell her parents, leaves home to have the baby girl (who looks just like her abuser), instantly loves baby and agrees to have parents adopt baby girl. At 17, abuser appears at her home (she is still living with her parents) and tells her he plans to go to court to gain custody of the now 2 year old child. She kills him to protect baby and calls the police, claiming the death was accidental. Family can't figure out how to mount a reasonable defense. What's wrong with this picture? Further, apparently, the only people to suffer psychologically from all of this is the brother and the mom who had to live on for several decades believing her daughter was dead. Believe me, it is an act of kindness to blow this story line. Don't waste your time like I did.
I generally live by the rule of "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," but in this case I will make an exception. Perhaps the Silent Sister struck me as so poorly written because I had just completed the Outlander Series, which I loved. My biggest issue with this book was how the author used stereotypes as a way to develop characters. For example, a main character meets someone wearing an Indigo t-shirt and she is a lesbian. Shortcuts like this happened all the time and it was really annoying and distracting. Add to that issue that the conflict between Riley and Jeannie seemed forced, and the ending was obvious early in the book. I suppose if you are looking for a mindless beach read, this might be a good pick. If you appreciate good writing, find something else.
Meh. The writing is above average however the story was less than compelling as it unfolded. It went from a psychological thriller feel to more of a soap opera feel, including the pacing. I never connected with either protagonist especially the main one. In short I was disappointed with where/how the story went based on the basic premise. I wouldn't tell someone not to read it but I certainly wouldn't recommend it unsolicited.
I really enjoyed this book. Admittedly, the author had me struggling to try and figure things out along the way. All of my guesses turned out to be wrong. Excellent character development and I definitely found myself get attached to a couple of characters.I highly recommend this book and fully intend to read more by this author.
I spent all of Easter on my porch reading this book. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I am usually pretty good with predicting plots as I read, and still had so many surprises in this one. I identified with the characters on many levels and felt a connection to them. My first by this author and definitely not my last.
It was a well-written book but I had it figured out about halfway through. I kept going at a feverish pace wondering if something was going to turn or twist and prove me wrong.... but no such luck. Ah well ... I am still going to try another book by Ms. Chamberlain in hopes that I will enjoy it as well.
