I thoroughly enjoyed this series by Colleen Coble. Each story focuses on two or three main characters but overlaps with those of previous stories. The first book takes place on Kauai. I think of it as Kaia and Jesses's story. Kaia is Hawaiian, does dolphin research, and has 2 brothers, Mano and Bane. They grew up without a mother. The second story takes place on Hawaii, Annie and Mano's story. Annie is Asian American, a volcanologist, and has two siblings, Leilani and Tomi. Their mother died while they were young. The third book takes place on Malokai, Laia and Bane's story. Laia spends much of her time learning the old ways, caring for others using holistic medicine. She has a sister, Eva, with Downs syndrome, she fears marriage and having children as she herself had a cleft lip. This story revolves around trying to find a sunken ship filled with treasure. Book four I call Lani (Leilani) and Ben's story. She was a wild child. When she is shot at she is blinded. Ben, who knows her past, helps her learn to cope with the help of a seeing eye dog. This story is very interesting as it seems like two stories at once because the problems stem back to 1973, time of the hippies and using different names. Half of the fun is trying to match current day characters to their other names so that the mystery can be solved. Book 5 has Bane and Laia preparing for marriage and the kidnapping of Laia's sister, Eva. It is of novella length.All are wonderfully written. They are stories of learning to trust, letting God be in control. They look at such questions as can a person change, how are people affected by those around them or those no longer around, can one forgive, and so many others. These stories are filled mystery and suspense and alway love and hope. I could not put them down.
This Aloha Reef collection caught my attention and I became an avid reader or Colleen Coble's books. The Hawaii setting and the mysteries involved have created many hours of good reading. When I see a book with Colleen Coble's name I buy it because I know that I am not wasting my money or the time reading the book.
The Aloha Reef Collection was awesome. I found it difficult to stop reading sometimes. I'd previously read about Kaia and Jessie and then got the rest of them in the collection. I so enjoyed getting to know Annie and Mano, Leia and Bane, and Lani and Ben. I loved how Colleen used animals throughout her stories like Nani, Wilson, and Fisher. They came to the rescue when necessary. I also liked how Colleen showed how worship of false gods can lead to trouble but trust in the One True God can lead to peace.
It dragged just a bit at times and the characters were a little difficult for me to follow from one book to the next, but overall I really enjoyed the series. If you did purchase them separately they are totally readable that way and none gives anything away about the others, which is probably why I had some problem tracking who was whom from the previous book.
Great read. Loved the story lines with romance and suspense. Loved how each book involved same family members and friends. Some of it was not realistic, but overall a very entertaining collection to read.
I love that the books come in a set and follow each other consecutively in my kindle. It’s much easier than having to check each time you start a new book than having to look up the series to make sure you’re getting the right one next.
Loved this book-I'm not only entertained but learning about the Hawaiian culture. It's really interesting. I also always learn something about my life from the experiences of characters in the books Colleen writes. It helps me look objectively at my own struggles and issues. I thoroughly enjoy her books.
The stories and characters carry on through the collection. It makes you want to keep reading and reading. Great suspense and romance.
