I remember when DK Eyewitness books were printed on quality paper and the cover and overall quality of their guides was excellent. No more. Though the material covered is pretty in depth I'm disappointed by the book itself. The photos in the book are washed out and all in all you can probably find something better at a bookstore.
This guide had good info on Washington DC, and the surrounding areas, and the pull-out map would be a great guide. Unfortunately DK Eyewitness has used very inferior paper and photos (many blurry, or faded) that just skimming through the book for the first time, the pages were already crinkling where my fingers had turned the pages. Just out of curiosity, I pulled out a sheet of my basic printer paper & compared it to the pages in the book & it was exactly the same quality! This book would never hold up for us if carried it with us & used it as our guide, so back it goes. I should've listened to what the other reviews said.

We visit the college student a few times a year, so we've been getting to spend a lot of time in Washington. I wanted more ideas for our upcoming trips. Most of this guide covers the usual sites -- the government buildings, the Smithsonian museums. But it's handy to have information about the newer museums, the Museum of the Bible, for example, or the Museum of African American History or the Museum of the American Indian. And I found a garden I want to visit, Bartholdi Park.Each section of the book has the attractions, a suggestion for a short walk and hotel and restaurant recommendations. Tread lightly on the restaurant recommendations. I think they're just a list of what's available, with no vetting for quality. For example, the cafe at the American Indian museum, Mitsitam -- it was overpriced and the food dreadful. My expensive salmon was obviously cooked from frozen -- it bled water when I cut into it. Yuk. You're much better off at the cafeteria at the Kennedy Center, the KC Café, on the top floor. The food is fabulous and reasonably priced. For a top-flight view of the city and Georgetown, go up to the rooftop bar at the newly renovated Watergate Hotel, Top of the Gate. Skip the bar food (it's minimal), but you can't beat the view. Neither of these eateries is included in the guide. These omissions made me drop the rating to three stars. You're not getting an insider's guide, or even an up-to-date one with this book.I've been researching the American woman's suffrage battle, so I checked to see what the guide had about it. The Belmont-Paul national monument is included -- it was the headquarters of the National Women's Party. Frederick Douglass's house is here, too. (Yes, he was a big supporter of women's suffrage.) But the page on the Museum of American History didn't mention the terrific suffrage and civil rights exhibit that's there now. I guess they can't include everything, but it would have been timely to include a mention of this exhibit in the year leading up to the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage.I also would have liked more choice in the "days out" section. Again, it's mostly the more known places. We've enjoyed out-of-the-way places like Leesburg, Middleburg, Waterford and Occoquan. They're not included in the guide... but maybe that's for the better!
QUICK SUMMARY: A handy guidebook to tuck into a purse or day-pack filled with tons of places to see, visit, experience -- both the well-known and more obscure places.BACKGROUND: I love DC and usually find one reason or another to visit each year. In 2019, I'll be visiting several times, so I'm happy to have this guide to plan my next trip.WHAT I LIKE:- Small enough that my wife can carry it in her purse :)- Has a laminated, fold-up map of the city, which my wife can also fit into her purse :D- The same map has a map of the Metro on the opposite side- Has a lot of color photos to help you get a sense of the place- A wonderful guide to browse through, especially while on a flight to the city- Lots of tidbits of information- Tells which Metro station is nearest to each DC destination- Has fascinating things I didn't know, like the Darth Vader grotesque on the National Cathedral's "dark side" :DWHAT COULD BE BETTER:- During my next trip, I want to see the new Bible museum. In the index, I looked under "Bible" but the museum isn't listed. It's listed under the letter "M" for Museum of the Bible. The index ought to have a "Bible" entry because I may not know the museum's name, but I know what the museum is about.- My next trip to DC is to, hopefully, be at the time the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. This guide gives very little information about this spectacular event. At the least, it should say when the blossoms typically hit their peak, and when the range of peak blossoms have been, historically.CONCLUSION: Yes, you have the Internet. But there's nothing as easy as flipping through a small guide like this to learn and discover things about a city you're visiting. I plan on getting a guide like this for my trip next year to Paris! Recommended!
